Lets turn the World Gold

The Ministry of Health and Child Care in collaboration with Kidzcan Zimbabwe is joining the rest of the world in commemorating the world’s youngest cancer patient. Since 1978, the gold ribbon and gold light have been the symbol representing the world's youngest cancer patients and honours their courageous struggle against child and adolescent cancer. Thus, the month of September has been set aside to stand in solidarity with the little heroes and heroines.

Having had the youngest child diagnosed with cancer at birth in 2015, Zimbabwe has recorded the youngest child with cancer diagnosed at 4 months, in 2016. An estimated 250,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with one of 16 forms of childhood cancers that are uniquely different from adult cancers. An absence of childhood cancer registries in the majority of countries around the world has led researchers to the conclusion that this number is highly underestimated and that countless other children/adolescents with cancer remain unreported and unaccounted for. Several types of childhood cancer are now curable; yet in developing countries, as few as 2 out of 10 children/adolescents survive as a result of a lack of access to essential medicines and treatment. While 8 out of 10 children/adolescents in developed countries will survive their cancer 5 years or longer, research shows that two-thirds will experience late effects from their treatment, with one quarter of survivors enduring a life-threatening health consequence of their treatment for childhood cancer.

Kindly stand with us as we join the whole community of childhood cancer champions, advocates, implementers and supporters in encouraging iconic buildings, historic landmarks, monuments, bridges and natural environments to Go Gold. Thus, Kidzcan will be honoured to have you as our guest on the 29th of September 2016, 5:30pm at Island Hospice House (6 Natal Road, Belgravia, Harare) as we Light It up Gold. Let us light up Gold during this month or hang gold ribbons in all places and turn the country Gold.

Please wear something GOLD for the event. Find attached Program.
